Beach Days on Maui: The Best Parks, Facilities, and Family Spots

There is a big difference between a beach you visit for a quick 20-minute swim, and a beach where you can comfortably spend the entire day with your family. A great "beach day" beach requires shade, facilities, easy parking, and calm water. Fortunately, Maui has some of the best beach parks in the state.
What Makes a Great Beach Day Spot?
When you are packing coolers, chairs, umbrellas, and kids, convenience is key. You want a beach with:
- Lifeguards on duty
- Restrooms and outdoor showers
- Grassy areas for picnicking
- Natural shade from Kiawe or Palm trees
- Close parking
The Best Beach Parks on Maui
Kamaole Beach Park III (South Kihei)
Affectionately known as "Kam III," this is the ultimate family beach park on Maui. It features a massive grassy hill that is perfect for flying kites, throwing a football, or setting up a large picnic. It has full facilities, a playground, a lifeguard tower, and a wide sandy beach.
It is incredibly popular with locals on the weekends.
Launiupoko Beach Park (West Maui)
Located just south of Lahaina, Launiupoko is unique because it features a natural wading pool separated from the open ocean by a lava rock wall. This makes it one of the safest places on the island for toddlers to splash around. The park has great grassy areas, BBQ grills, and a fun, mellow longboard surf break right out front.
Kapalua Bay (West Maui)
While it lacks the massive grassy parks of Kam III, Kapalua Bay makes up for it with incredibly calm, protected water. It is shaped like a horseshoe, which blocks most of the wind and swell. There are restrooms and showers available, making it a highly desirable spot for a comfortable, luxurious beach day.
Baldwin Beach Park (North Shore)
Located just outside of Paia, Baldwin Beach is a massive, beautiful stretch of white sand. It features a lifeguard tower, restrooms, and a large pavilion. The "Baby Beach" section at the far west end is protected by a reef, creating a calm lagoon that is perfect for families, while the main beach often has larger shorebreak.
Real Maui Life Local Notes
The wind dictates your beach day. As a general rule, you want to plan your beach days for the morning. By 1:00 PM, the trade winds often pick up, blowing sand and making sitting on the beach less enjoyable. If you want a full-day beach experience, head out by 8:30 AM, enjoy the calm morning, have lunch, and head home when the wind turns on.
Where To Live For Everyday Beach Access
If packing up the car for a beach day sounds like too much work, living within walking distance of a beach park changes everything.
- South Kihei: The absolute best neighborhood for walkable access to fully-equipped beach parks (Kam I, II, and III).
- Wailea: For easy, paved access to pristine, manicured beaches.
- Napili / Honokowai: For close proximity to family-friendly West Maui bays.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drink alcohol on Maui beaches?
No. It is illegal to consume alcohol on state and county beaches and in beach parks in Hawaii.
Are there grills available at the beach parks?
Yes, many county beach parks (like Kam III and Launiupoko) have public charcoal grills. However, they are first-come, first-served, and very popular on weekends.
