Beach Walks on Maui: The Best Paths, Shores, and Sunrise Routines

For many Maui residents, a beach walk isn’t something you do on vacation—it’s how you start or end your day. It’s a time to catch up with neighbors, watch the outrigger canoes glide past, look for whale spouts on the horizon, and ground yourself in the beauty of the island.
The Art of the Maui Beach Walk
Not all beaches are created equal when it comes to walking. Some have sand that is too soft and steep, making walking a grueling workout. Others have rocky outcroppings that prevent a continuous stroll.
The best walking beaches have a gentle slope, firm packed sand near the water line, and enough length to let your mind wander.
The Best Walking Beaches and Paths
Sugar Beach (North Kihei to Ma‘alaea)
If you want miles of uninterrupted sand, Sugar Beach is the undisputed king. Stretching for over four miles from North Kihei to Ma‘alaea, this is the longest continuous beach on Maui. It is a favorite for morning runners, dog walkers, and anyone who wants to walk for an hour without ever having to turn around.
The sand near the water is typically firm, and the views of the West Maui Mountains are spectacular.
The Wailea Beach Path
For a more manicured experience, the Wailea Beach Path is a paved, oceanfront walkway that winds for about 1.5 miles past luxury resorts, multi-million dollar estates, and five stunning crescent beaches (Mokapu, Ulua, Wailea, and Polo). It is perfect for those who prefer not to walk in the sand, or those pushing a stroller. The landscaping is immaculate, and the people-watching is excellent.
Keawakapu Beach (South Kihei / Wailea border)
Consistently voted one of the best beaches in the world, Keawakapu offers about 0.7 miles of pristine, soft sand. Backed by luxury homes rather than massive resorts, it feels slightly more residential. It’s a classic spot for a sunset stroll followed by dinner at one of the beachfront restaurants at either end.
Kaanapali Beach Walk
Similar to Wailea but with a higher energy level, the paved path along Kaanapali Beach runs for miles in front of major resorts and Whalers Village. It’s bustling, active, and offers front-row seats to cliff diving at Black Rock and sunset catamaran departures.
Kapalua Coastal Trail
This is less of a traditional beach walk and more of a rugged coastal hike. The trail winds through the Kapalua resort area, crossing lava fields, passing the Ritz-Carlton, and skirting along the edge of dramatic ocean cliffs. It offers a cooler, breezier, and more dramatic walking experience than South Maui.
Real Maui Life Local Notes
Timing is everything. The best time for a beach walk is within the first two hours after sunrise, or the hour just before sunset. By midday, the sand becomes scorching hot, the trade winds can whip sand against your legs, and the sun exposure is intense. If you walk Sugar Beach in the afternoon, be prepared to walk directly into a 20mph headwind on your way back to Kihei.
Where To Live If You Love Beach Walks
If stepping out your door and walking along the ocean is your ultimate goal, focus on these areas:
- Wailea: Unmatched for paved, scenic, resort-style walking paths.
- North Kihei: The absolute best access to the miles-long stretch of Sugar Beach.
- Ma‘alaea: Offers immediate access to the quietest end of Sugar Beach.
- Kapalua: Perfect for those who prefer dramatic coastal trails and cooler weather.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are dogs allowed on Maui beaches?
Dogs are generally not allowed on most county beach parks. However, they are allowed on beaches below the high-water mark (state jurisdiction) provided they are leashed. Sugar Beach is a very popular spot for local dog walkers.
Is it safe to walk the beaches at night?
While Maui is generally very safe, beaches are unlit and very dark at night. It is easy to trip on unseen rocks, coral, or debris. It’s best to stick to paved, lit paths like Wailea or Kaanapali after dark.
